Principal's Report

School Activities

It has been a busy start to Term 4 at Rosehill Secondary College. It was terrific to see the excitement among our Year 10 students returning from the Tasmanian camp, and even more so among the students who participated in the Japanese exchange program during the final weeks of Term 3. I am sure both experiences have created lasting memories for all involved. Well done to the staff who organised and supervised these wonderful activities.

Year 12

I would also like to acknowledge Ms Hudson, who served as Acting Principal during the final week of Year 12 classes. By all reports, the final day celebrations were conducted with respect and consideration. No doubt, students experienced a mix of joy and sadness as they marked the culmination of 13 years of schooling. Well done to our school captains, Year 12 Coordinators and staff who helped make the end of schooling a positive and memorable experience for our Year 12 students.

We wish our Year 12 students the very best of luck as they prepare for their final examinations. We encourage, support and expect all students sitting written examinations next week to maintain a significant and sustained commitment to their study and exam preparation. Many students have already commenced their end-of-year examinations.

Thorough preparation, a commitment to doing one's best and a positive attitude towards learning will give students every opportunity to achieve their goals. We encourage all our Year 12 students to remain focused, make the most of the time available to them and approach their examinations with confidence and determination.

Yarning Circle

I’m also pleased to report that our yarning circle has been installed and has become another terrific passive recreation place for students to gather, share stories and enjoy.

Futsal Court

In addition to the yarning circle, we have made significant progress on our futsal court. We hope to see this completed in the near future and I’m certain it will become a popular space during recess and lunch in addition to providing another option for our Physical Education classes.

Facilities Update

In further good news, I can confirm that we have received approval from the VSBA to remove the remaining brick cladding from A and B wings and to replace the old wooden windows with new modern aluminium windows. This work will also involve the creation of a new walkway path which will run adjacent to the science rooms, removing the need for students to walk through the front car park.

Guest Speaker

Earlier this week we were very fortunate to secure a wonderful guest speaker Scott Darlow who is a singer songwriter and an advocate of his FLUTE philosophy. Scott spent the day presenting to our Year 11, 10 and 9 students. In the afternoon, he then provided our staff with PD and shared a version of his presentation. A proud Indigenous Man from Yorta Yorta Country, Scott explained the meaning behind FLUTE. Forgiveness, Love, Understanding, Tolerance and Empathy.

School Performance Report

Each year, every state school receives a detailed report assessing its progress against key measures, including NAPLAN results, VCE data, student survey data, and attendance.

I’m please to report that Rosehill Secondary College has once again achieved a score of High for Teaching and Learning and High for Wellbeing resulting in an overall rating of HIGH. This is a testament to the sustained improvement journey over many years and the high-quality teaching and learning programs that are delivered in a calm, safe and supportive learning environment.

Year 8 Money and Law Mock Election

As part of our study on democracy and elections in Australia, the Year 8 Money and Law class participated in a mock election to vote on their favourite chocolate bar. With the overarching learning goal, to examine the process of how the preferential system of voting works, what better way than to hold an election in class with official polling booths and a ballot box!

The ‘candidates’ for the most preferred chocolate bar are: Twirl, Kit Kat, Dairy Milk, Milky Way, and Boost.

Similar to a real election, students were asked three questions, ‘What is your name?’, ‘Where do you live?’, and ‘Have you voted before in this election today?’, before their name was marked off the electoral roll.

It was quite a surprise that the most preferred chocolate was Kit Kat achieving the required 50% + 1 votes to win, and no one casting an informal vote!

Many thanks to all the enthusiastic students that volunteered to be polling assistants and scrutiny assistants.

2026 Student Ambassador (Voice) Project Closing Forum

Thursday 17th September, six Rosehill Secondary College students — Hengsong, Toby, Roni, Gorja, Audrey and Leane — proudly represented our school at the 2026 Student Ambassador (Voice) Project Closing Forum, held at the Angliss Conference Centre in Melbourne.

The forum brought together international and domestic students from schools across Victoria to share ideas and celebrate their contributions towards building respectful, diverse and inclusive school communities.

Throughout the project, Rosehill's student ambassadors explored the importance of Respect, Diversity and Inclusion within our school community. Through activities such as Multicultural Day, Harmony Day and Jersey Day, the project encouraged international students to feel more connected to school life and build confidence, while providing local students with valuable opportunities to develop intercultural understanding, form friendships and celebrate different cultures.

At the closing forum, our students also shared a small gift with fellow students, teachers and staff from participating schools — a pin featuring the Rosehill Secondary College logo. This thoughtful gesture was a wonderful way to represent our school and share a little piece of the Rosehill community with others.

A highlight of the day was when our student ambassadors received the “Best Designed Slide” Award from the Department of Education in recognition of their presentation. This achievement reflects their creativity, teamwork and dedication throughout the project.

As Rosehill Secondary College participates in the project for the second year, this recognition is an exciting milestone and a great source of motivation for the future. Our student ambassadors have demonstrated how student voices, cultural understanding and small acts of kindness can make a meaningful difference in creating a welcoming and inclusive school environment.

Year 9 Humanities Primary Source Analysis

At the end of Term 3, our Year 9 Humanities classroom was recently transformed into a vibrant pop-up museum as students got hands-on with history! Thanks to a special delivery from the Australian War Memorial, our historians-in-training had the rare opportunity to explore a Memorial Box packed with real and replica primary sources from the First World War.

From heavy woollen uniforms and battle gear to personal letters and vintage equipment, the classroom was buzzing with excitement as students unboxed artefacts that brought our nation’s history off the textbook page and into their hands.

Uncovering Stories Beyond the Trenches

The museum activity offered a fascinating glimpse into the diverse experiences of Australians during a defining era in our history. The collection extended far beyond the battlefield, encouraging students to explore:

  • The Anzac Experience: Handling the kit, helmets, and personal items carried by soldiers on the front line.
  • Service at Sea and Air: Discovering the vital roles played by Australian sailors and early aviators.
  • Nurses on the Frontline: Examining the medical equipment and uniforms of the brave women who served in harsh conditions overseas.
  • Life on the Home Front: Exploring how everyday Australians supported the war effort from back home.

Future Curators at Work

What made the day truly standout was the exceptional attitude of our Year 9 cohort. Students stepped into the shoes of museum curators, engaging with the artefacts with deep respect and maturity. They asked thoughtful, probing questions about who might have owned these items and what life was like over a century ago.

To lock in their learning, each student created a detailed Museum Brochure, carefully selecting and analysing five primary sources of their choice. They documented the origin, purpose, and emotional weight behind each object, producing work that belonged in a professional gallery!

Coming Soon: Round Two!

The enthusiasm, curiosity, and respect displayed throughout the activity made it an overwhelming success. Because it was such a hit, we are thrilled to announce that the Australian War Memorial Memorial Box will be returning to our Humanities classes again next semester!

A huge congratulations to our Year 9 students for making this hands-on history experience so unforgettable. Keep an eye out… You might just have a future head curator living under your roof!

STEP - Let the Debating Begin

Our STEP students are gearing up for an exciting STEP Debate in Term 4! They've asked for it and so we're making it happen!

During a recent STEP Home Group, Ms Abuacan introduced students to the debating process, explaining how debates work and what is involved in preparing and presenting a strong argument.

Students then had the opportunity to volunteer and select a position they would like to take, getting the ball rolling for our Term 4 preparations. We were thrilled to see so many enthusiastic volunteers and hear some great ideas already emerging!

Watch this space — we can’t wait to see how this unfolds and, most importantly, see all our fierce STEP debaters in action! 🎤👏

A Taste of Maths in STEP

Maths was extra sweet in STEP this week as we explored fractions through a fun and colourful Skittles activity!

Our students had the opportunity to bring their learning to life by using Skittles to consolidate their understanding of fractions while investigating the delicious variety of Skittles flavours. From sorting and counting to comparing quantities, students worked out what fraction of their Skittles were each colour and represented their findings in different ways.

The activity encouraged students to put their mathematical thinking into action, simplify fractions, compare parts of a whole and explore how fractions can represent real-life situations. We also extended our learning by making predictions, looking for patterns, graphing and investigating which flavours appeared most and least frequently.

Of course, there was plenty of excitement as students discovered their results and debated which Skittles flavour deserved the title of favourite! 🍓🍋🍇

It was wonderful to see students engaged, collaborating and developing their mathematical understanding through a hands-on experience. Who knew fractions could be so sweet?

In Maths at RSC, we believe that learning is even more powerful when we can explore, investigate and have fun along the way.

What a delicious way to embed our learning and extend our knowledge of fractions!

From Secondary School to Nanotechnology: Triet’s Journey in Chemistry

Dr Triet Nguyen, a former RSC student who has pursued a career pathway in Chemistry, recently returned to share his journey and insights with our STEP students. Having completed his PhD, Triet delivered an engaging speech on Nanotechnology, sharing his knowledge of this exciting field and the opportunities it offers for future scientists.

Drawing on his university experiences and career journey, Triet offered valuable advice to students navigating their secondary school years. He encouraged them to stay curious, build a strong foundation in science, embrace challenges and remain open to the many possibilities that further study can offer.

His visit was an inspiring reminder that the foundations built in secondary school can lead to exciting pathways in science, research and beyond. Triet’s story demonstrated the value of perseverance, passion and lifelong learning in turning an interest in Chemistry into a rewarding career.
