Welcome back to Term 3. I trust both staff and students had an opportunity over the break to relax, recharge and reflect on their efforts throughout the first half of the year. I look forward to another semester of consistent hard work, commitment and success across our school community.

Congratulations to all students who achieved strong results during Semester 1. Your dedication and perseverance have been rewarded, and I encourage you to maintain that momentum throughout the remainder of the year. For those students who may have been disappointed with their results, Semester 2 provides a fresh opportunity to make positive changes. Our staff are committed to supporting every student to achieve their best, and I urge anyone requiring additional assistance to take advantage of our after-school homework program.

Term 3

This is always one of the busiest and most important periods of the school year as we begin planning for 2027. Over the coming weeks we will finalise transition arrangements, conduct course counselling, complete subject selections and begin staffing preparations for next year. Mr Connors and the course selection team have been working tirelessly behind the scenes to ensure these processes run smoothly. Important dates and information have been published on Compass, while our Year 9 and 10 students have spent considerable time during ID lessons preparing for their upcoming course counselling interviews. A reminder that parents and carers are encouraged to attend these interviews with their children as this is probably the most important process for our Year 10 into Year 11 VCE transition.

Year 7 Transition

We are also delighted by the strong level of interest from Grade 6 students wishing to enrol at Rosehill in 2027. Once again, we expect to have at least eight Year 7 home groups, maintaining a stable student population which allows us to plan with confidence and offer a large range of subject offerings and extra curricula options. We look forward to welcoming our future students and their families at our Year 7 Information Evening on Thursday 27th August.

Year 10 Work Experience

Our Year 10 students have returned with a positive attitude after a month away from regular classes, following the term break and their two weeks of work experience. Ms Vossos and Mr Raiti did an outstanding job coordinating the program and ensuring every student had the opportunity to participate. While many schools have reduced or discontinued work experience programs, we continue to believe these experiences are invaluable. They provide students with genuine insight into the workplace, help them explore future career pathways and often play an important role in shaping the decisions they make during the course counselling process.

Facilities

Over the holidays, work continued on improving our school facilities. The new glass-enclosed study area within the library has now been completed, creating a quieter and more functional learning space. This addition will be particularly beneficial for our Year 12 students as they prepare for their final examinations later this year.

School Bus

We have also recently finalised the purchase of our new school bus. The vehicle is a near-new second-hand bus with very low kilometres, is in excellent condition and, being automatic, can be driven by a greater number of staff members. It also increases our seating capacity from 22 to 25 students, providing greater flexibility for excursions and school activities.

Year 11 Ski Camp

Our extensive extracurricular program continues to provide students with valuable experiences beyond the classroom. It was wonderful to see our Year 11 Ski Camp once again prove to be a great success. Although snowfall was lighter than in previous years, students thoroughly enjoyed the experience, developed new skills and represented the College exceptionally well. I sincerely thank Mr Lawrence for his outstanding organisation of the camp, along with the supervising staff who gave up their time to ensure students had a safe and enjoyable experience.

Incursions

The beginning of the term has also seen several guest speakers visit the College to provide valuable learning opportunities for students across a range of year levels. Presentations from Success Integrated, our VCE guest speakers and Victoria Police have all delivered important messages and practical advice that will support students both academically and personally.

Parent Opionion Survey

Finally, a randomly selected group of parents will receive an invitation to participate in the annual Parent Opinion Survey later his term. If you are selected, I encourage you to complete the survey honestly and openly. Your feedback is extremely valuable and helps us identify what we are doing well and where we can continue to improve. Each selected family will receive a unique access code, and all responses remain anonymous.

What an incredible and delicious day at the auditorium! Our Year 9 Business, Economics, and Legal Studies students stepped out of their regular routine and into the entrepreneurial spotlight for the Shark Tank Rosehill: Breakfast Cereal Challenge. It was billed as the ultimate classroom entrepreneurship challenge, and our students certainly delivered on creativity, flavour, and fun!

The mission was clear: teams had to compete to design, brand, and pitch their very own breakfast cereal. It wasn't just about coming up with a tasty treat; students had to build the ultimate cereal brand from the ground up. This included everything from box design and advertisement to catchy jingles and a persuasive marketing pitch.

The ‘Sharks’ that our students needed to impress were no less than our principal class:

Five phenomenal teams brought their A-game to the auditorium:

The level of innovation was off the charts! Our student "entrepreneurs" pitched some truly memorable and mouth-watering concepts, showcasing unique and bold flavour combinations alongside creative and eye-catching packaging designs. Some of the standout products pitched to the judges included:

• Space Flakes: Energising flaky cereals made from corn, barley and oats with added nutrients and delicious 'moon rocks' (yogurt covered sultanas).

• Galaxy Crunch: Chocolate-flavoured wholegrain cereal rings mixed with marshmallow stars.

• Berrybarks: A strawberry flavoured corn puff cereal featuring the unforgettable slogan, “The berry best way to start your day!”.

• Banana Blast: A banana-flavoured cereal designed to improve focus, featuring the Curious George Monkey.

• Confetti Crunch: A festive sprinkle cereal that brought the energy with the jingle, "Wake up bright, it's time for fun, Confetti Crunch for everyone!".

The pressure was on as the pitches were evaluated across four tough criteria:

1. Creativity & Packaging Design
2. Taste Appeal & Flavour Innovation
3. Branding & Visual Identity
4. Ad Impact & Marketing Pitch

After the Sharks deliberated over the best branding, best flavour, and best ad, they had to crown the Overall Champion, which is the top-scoring team across all criteria.

Team Curious George completely wowed the room and walked away victorious! For their spectacular efforts, the team took home a customised certificate, the highly coveted golden spoon, and their very own tiny trophies to display with pride.

Overall, it was a wonderfully fun and engaging learning experience for all the students involved. Great work, teams! Awesome support from our Sharks too! We can't wait to see what brilliant business ideas you all cook up next.

What a finish to an absolute whirlwind of a debating season!

Our stellar Year 9 Debate Team stepped up for their fifth and final round, delivering a masterclass in heart, hustle, and high-stakes persuasion. In an absolute nail-biter against St Aloysius College, our team missed out on the win by a razor-thin 2-point margin. The adjudicators were practically wringing their hands trying to pick a winner… it was that close!

While St Aloysius took the official win on paper, let’s just say… if we’re measuring future potential, our team’s trajectory is soaring through the roof (and we have a sneaking suspicion the opposition has a bit more homework left to do than we do! 😉).

A massive round of applause for our brilliant trio who proudly rocked their school blazers and represented our school with ultimate flair, poise, and sharp wit:

• Jem Howe (9E)

• Jordan Shah (9A)

Looking back at Round 1, the transformation in these three is nothing short of incredible. Across all three pillars of debating, Matter (the arguments), Manner (the delivery), and Method (the structure), Alexia, Jem, and Jordan have levelled up exponentially. They walked into Round 5 looking like seasoned pros, holding their ground with total confidence.

Every great team uses a tight match as fuel for the next season. The feedback from the adjudicators gave us a clear roadmap where we can push our skills even further:

• Deeper Rebuttals: Moving beyond just answering opposition points to unpacking why their logic breaks down.

• Mastering the "Signpost": Clearly flagging which opposition speaker we’re taking aim at so the judges can follow our trail of destruction without missing a beat!

Year 10 debating brings tougher prompts, sharper competition, and higher stakes, and with these small tweaks, this team is going to be an absolute force to be reckoned with.

Win or lose, our team looked sharp, spoke proudly, and represented our values brilliantly from start to finish.

A huge, heartfelt THANK YOU goes out to the wonderful parents and guardians. Whether it was driving to venues, enduring late-evening pickup rushes, or offering words of encouragement before the big rounds, your support made this season possible.

Debating Coordinator

More than 8,500 students sat the Junior Science Olympiad examination in June, and we are delighted to announce that Daniel D’Agostino (9E) achieved an outstanding result and has been invited to participate in the second stage of the competition.

Success in the International Junior Science Olympiad requires strong knowledge and problem-solving skills across biology, chemistry and physics. Over four weeks, from Sunday 5th July to Sunday 2nd August, students in Stage 2 will undertake self-directed learning in these three disciplines and complete weekly homework sets designed to prepare them for the next phase of the competition.

In addition to Daniel’s exceptional achievement, Jem Howe (9E), Isabelle Dony (9E) and Lucy Kanaris (8E) have been invited to participate in Stage 1 of the 2026 JSO Talent Development Program.

The Talent Development Program is a three-stage, national, invitation-only online program for high-performing students in Years 7–10. It aims to support students in developing the knowledge and skills needed for future Australian Science Olympiads, while also building broader academic capabilities and connecting participants with like-minded students from across the country. Stage 1 will run over four weeks, from Monday 29th June to Friday 21st July.

Congratulations to Daniel, Jem, Isabelle and Lucy on their outstanding achievements, and to all Junior School students who participated in this year's Junior Science Olympiad.

Congratulations to our Year 10 students for participating in the Work Experience Program during the last two weeks of Term 2.

At Rosehill Secondary College, we are fortunate to offer a strong Work Experience Program, with students being supported and prepared through the Year 10 ID Program.

This year, students completed placements across a wide range of industries, workplaces and locations, giving them valuable insight into the world of work.

During their work experience, students had the opportunity to:

• Gain an understanding of employer expectations.
• Develop employability skills.
• Explore careers of interest.
• Exercise self-discipline and responsibility.
• Build self-understanding and self-confidence.
• Develop maturity, social skills and independence.

It was pleasing to see our students represent both themselves and the College so well. Several students impressed their employers and were offered part-time employment following their placements, which is a fantastic outcome and a credit to their attitude and work ethic.

A special thank you to all the employers who participated in our program and supported our students. We also thank all parents and carers, the Year 10 ID teachers, and the staff who visited students during their placements. Your support helped make this year’s Work Experience Program a success.

Rosehill Careers Team

On Monday 22^nd June, the Year 11 cohort were fortunate enough to attend a Wellbeing Day excursion to Docklands, organised by our coordinators. This day aimed to strengthen and build skills of teamwork and togetherness within the Year 11 cohort by providing students with an opportunity to enjoy time with peers in engaging activities.

The day began with a visit to Archie Brothers arcade in Docklands, where students were able to participate in various games and activities such as arcade games, bumper cars, laser tag and many more enjoyable activities. This opportunity encouraged teamwork, friendliness and allowed students to build stronger friendships with one another. We then had lunch and afterwards went to watch Toy Story 5 at Hoyts which was a relaxing experience for us all.

Overall, the Year 11 City Adventure Day was a memorable and positive experience that allowed students to build memories with friends, strengthen friendships as well as reward students after a long exam period.

A big thank you to Mr Tetradis and Ms Vossos for organising this wonderful and enjoyable day as well as other staff who came along on the day. We all enjoyed it heaps and appreciate your planning that went into creating such an enjoyable experience for everyone.

Gorja Bhardwaj - Year 11

Each year, the Year 12 VM students commit to a term of volunteering within the local community. This year, students have contributed their time and effort to a range of organisations, including St Vincent de Paul Society, Australian Red Cross, Jump! Swim Schools, The Helping Hands Mission, and various primary schools.

Following is a reflection from Jacinta, Harrison, and Sienna:

Every Friday at 12:00pm, we volunteer at the Red Cross in Ascot Vale. We help organise and sort toys, clothing, and decorations, as well as lift heavy items to complete tasks that would otherwise take the staff weeks to finish. While we mainly focus on shop organisation, we also adapt to any task the workers need, such as serving customers at the front, scanning tags, and carrying goods inside.

We feel incredibly privileged to support the Red Cross and always look forward to our time there.

During the holidays I participated in the Japanese workshop at Mentone Girls Secondary College with many other students from various schools.

We each gave presentations about our work and played some fun games to get to know each other better. After that we learned many helpful tips about the upcoming exams and how to do well on them.

It was a really fun experience and I think it helped a lot with preparing me for both the rest of my SACs and my exams for Japanese.

I’m super grateful for the opportunity to participate in this program and I hope it continues next year too.

Ezra - Year 12

Dear Parent/Carer,

Thank you for your important support for our campaign for improved pay and conditions. At the moment an agreement between the state government and AEU members is not yet in place and the dispute remains unresolved. This means AEU members at Rosehill Secondary College stopped work for 24 hours on Thursday 23 July 2026. It is important that you know exactly why we reluctantly decided to take this action.

We understand our action presented difficulties for some parents and carers. However, the fact is that when it comes to investing in education, Victoria is bottom of the class. We are very concerned about the impact of this on your child’s education.

Every other state and territory fund their public schools to the minimum amount required, except for Victoria. The Allan Labour government has made the deliberate decision to not fund Victorian public schools to the nationwide funding standard, which means that staff at our school are regularly working many hours of unpaid overtime each week to ensure that students receive the support and educational programs they deserve. The goodwill of teachers, education support staff, and principals is no replacement for full and proper funding. Victorian public schools can no longer be the lowest funded in the country and AEU members are standing together to demand that our schools are fully funded.

Australian Education Union members in every public school across Victoria are trying to get the state government to fund our schools properly and deliver a new pay and conditions agreement. While an offer was made by the government in May this year, it failed to address some key concerns including in relation to workloads that need to be better addressed in a revised offer.

At the moment, the state government refuses to make the investment that would properly allow schools to recruit and retain the staff needed. With only 3 in 10 public school workers planning to stay in their jobs until retirement, nothing is more important for the learning and wellbeing of our students than retaining the existing workforce and attracting the next generation, especially at a time of ongoing staffing shortages.

This means as union members we were left with no alternative but to take further stop work action on 23 July 2026, and we would like to count on your support in this campaign.

Please let the state government know that you want Victorian public schools to be fully funded and for public school staff to have increased salaries and improved conditions. One supportive action that you can take would be to write to your state Labour member of the Victorian Parliament to tell them that you expect your school to be fully funded and that school staff receive pay and conditions that reflect the importance and value of their work.
