Principal's Report

As we reach the end of Term 2, I take this opportunity to thank you, our school community, for your support throughout the term and to acknowledge the work of our students and staff.

Our students have enjoyed a full range of academic and extracurricular activities throughout the term, ranging from camps, excursions, academic competitions, lunchtime clubs, chess competitions, leadership activities and sporting events, to name just a few. Next term, our performing arts students will be part of our wonderful school production, The Pink Room, which I am looking forward to very much.

With the publication of Semester 1 reports, I urge families to review their young person’s learning achievements, work habits and progress to date. We learn by doing, sometimes failing and then trying again. Reflecting and acting upon considered feedback from teachers helps us grow and improve as learners. Students, please take time to read over your teachers’ comments and consider what will come next for you after what I hope is a relaxing and fun holiday.

To our Year 12 students, you will have a break from daily classes, and I hope this provides time for you to draw breath and spend some time doing what you love in amongst your study commitments. It is a pivotal time of year for you as you review your learning and commit to plans for the final phase of your secondary school studies. You have a dedicated support team both at home and here at school, who all want the best for you, so keep that front of mind and do your best. I wish you well in your practice exams.

School Performance and Progress

In recent weeks our School Improvement Team, comprising senior leaders on staff, has been reviewing our performance and progress for the year to date by completing the Annual Implementation Plan mid-year monitoring. I am pleased to report that our school is tracking very well in terms of the data we review on an annual basis, including NAPLAN, PIVOT, and Attitudes to School Data, and that we continue to show growth as a school in key areas relating to learning and wellbeing. This happens from a considered approach, hard work and commitment, and I thank our leaders and staff for all they do to make Rosehill a successful school.

Victorian Global Learning Awards

Warm congratulations to Dac Thanh Dat LUONG and Tu Uyen HA for their success at the Department of Education’s Victorian Global Learning Awards. The awards, announced at the RACV City Club last Friday, celebrate the academic excellence and outstanding extracurricular achievements of Victoria’s international school students. Dac Thanh Dat was presented with the Innovation Award, while Tu Uyen received the Arts Achievement (Visual Arts) Commendation Award.

Cyber-Safety

Thank you to the parents and carers who attended our recent Cyber-Safety evening with Susan McLean. Susan spoke authoritatively about the positive and negative aspects of young people’s online activities and shared stories, data and tips for parents to keep their children safe. Susan also presented to our Year 7 and 10 cohorts during the day.

A few of the standout messages to parents for me were:

  • Your experience on a given platform will not be the same as your child’s experience on the same platform. Your child will be presented with very different pop-ups and advertisements than what you see. As adults, we need to be aware of what they are seeing.
  • Statistically, 69% of 12-year-olds have sent or received a sexually explicit message or image (SEXT).
  • For this reason alone, do not allow your child to have devices in bedrooms and bathrooms.
  • Cyberbullying is a criminal offence. If a victim, screenshot, report and then block.

Education Support Staff Day

Teaching and principal staff had the opportunity to recognise and celebrate our wonderful Education Support Staff at a special morning team last week. Our school simply would not function without their commitment and expertise – in the administration office, the classroom, the library, the science lab, the food technology kitchen, the careers room, the gymnasium and on the grounds – they do so much, and we are very grateful to work beside this team of good people. Fittingly, our Business Manager, Judith Wright, won the ES Fun Facts quiz which is a testament to her knowledge of her team. Well done to all involved!

Work Experience

Congratulations to all Year 10s as they complete their two weeks of Work Experience placements. An enormous amount of effort (and paperwork) goes into making this program run and I thank our Careers Team and Year 10 Coordinators for all their work. From these placements, students learn about themselves and possibilities that may lie ahead. Some come away with offers of part-time work or traineeships. All return to school with increased maturity and understanding of the school-work-life connection. Thank you to all staff members who took time to visit students at their places of work over the fortnight.

Kogakkan High School Sister School Visit

We are looking forward to hosting students and staff from our sister school, Kogakkan High School early next term and have had an excellent response to our request for host families. Thank you to Alexandra Kavanagh and Ann Anderson for their work in developing the program of events for the visit, which includes excursions to Puffing Billy and the Melbourne Zoo, a primary school visit, EAL activities and a welcome assembly. Coinciding with Kogakkan’s visit, our Year 11 students will be running a multicultural day on Friday 8th August to celebrate the diversity of cultures within our school community.

Moonee Valley City Council

We have received the following notice from Moonee Valley City Council relating to driver behaviour near our school. Please take note and ensure that you are following the road rules in place.

Council have recently received a complaint relating to parents that are making illegal right hand turns coming out of Sapphire Street turning into Rosehill Road.

Council is committed to increasing safety around schools; therefore, we are requesting if the school can please add some communication to parents in your next school newsletter that this action is prohibited at this location and creates a safety issue for all road users in the immediate area.

Please also note that Victoria Police have also been notified of the illegal behaviour occurring at this location and may visit the location.

End of Semester Reflection – Senior School

As we close another chapter in the academic year, I am filled with a sense of pride and gratitude. The end of this semester marks more than just the halfway point of the school year—it represents the growth, resilience, and achievements of every student and teacher in the Rosehill Secondary College School Community.

This semester has brought with it both challenges and triumphs. From academic milestones to sporting events, leadership initiatives to creative showcases, our students have demonstrated remarkable dedication and enthusiasm highlighting the Rosehill moto of Respect, Initiative and Learning. We have seen first hand how our senior students have supported one another, led with integrity, and embraced every opportunity to learn and grow. These moments — both big and small — are what make Rosehill a dynamic and inspiring place to be.

Senior students have been particularly busy finalising Unit 1 and 3 SACS, Examinations at Year 11 as well as some subject changes based on Careers Counselling advice as well as the completion of the VCE General Achievement Test (GAT) for 192 students on the 17th June. We have also focussed on Careers choices and senior students have attended selected careers excursions in order to allow our students to aspire to look ahead regarding their personal careers pathways. To allow the School Community at the Senior end to flourish and grow is not based on luck. It is based on specific choices driven by updated data sets such as ATOSS and PIVOT data.

The Year 12 Pyjama day and cheese toastie brekkie morning of Wednesday 24th June was a great success. The cohort had some time to collaborate together and enjoy each other’s company in a relaxed atmosphere. The Year 11 cohort on the other hand enjoyed a day out in the City on Thursday 25th June. Team building activities run by Urban Quest followed by an afternoon movie allowed our Year 11 students to connect, make new friends and bond.

It will no doubt be a busy Semester ahead. We have Unit 3 Trail Examinations taking place in the second week of the holiday break in some areas of Study. That is ; July 14th, 15th and 16th. We have Year 12 Graduation and Year 11 Presentation Ball \Formal preparations underway as we speak. Our Careers Practitioners are extremely busy preparing our Year 12 students in course counselling Pathways for 2026.

I also take this opportunity to thank our Year 12 Coordinator, Cassandra Imbriano who will be commencing Maternity Leave. We wish her all the best in this new phase of her life. We welcome Leesa Wilson into the role of Year 12 Coordinator as well as Emily Fazzari as the new Assistant Year 12 Coordinator. I also take this opportunity to thank the Year 11 Coordination Team for their dedication and commitment towards our Year 11 cohort.

On behalf of the Senior Team, we encourage everyone to take time to rest, reflect, and recharge. Celebrate your accomplishments and return ready to finish the year strong. The best is still to come.

Year 11 Adventure Day

In Week 10, our Year 11 students wrapped up Unit 1 with a much-anticipated City Adventure Day—a celebration of their hard work and a chance to strengthen wellbeing, team spirit and school connectedness during their first year of VCE.

The day began with a high-energy scavenger hunt through Melbourne's CBD, encouraging collaboration, problem-solving and plenty of laughs. Congratulations to our winning team — Abbas, Jemma, Sara, Bill, and Xavier — who completed the challenge with enthusiasm and teamwork!

After the hunt, students enjoyed some well-earned downtime with friends at Melbourne Central, followed by a screening of How to Train Your Dragon — a personal favourite of Mr Wallace!

A big thank you to all students who attended and proudly represented our school values, especially respect, throughout the day. Thank you also to all the supervising staff. It was a fantastic way to celebrate the end of Unit 1, recharge, and continue building resilience and connection as a cohort.

Year 9 Summit Camp

Seventy Year 9 Rosehill Secondary students embarked on a journey to The Summit in Trafalgar. The camp was as much about resilience as it was a journey of understanding the strengths each student has. Strengths that are unseen, but when in the right conditions, brightly shine in every step they take and, in every decision made. Every rotation and every activity highlighted what we all know already, a group of young people who showed empathy toward each other, who faced their fears, who ‘gave it a go’ and who worked together as teams. This teamwork was fostered by the five key values of the camp:

  1. Make lots of mistakes
  2. Play all in
  3. Have fun
  4. Don’t go home wondering 'what if'
  5. Get comfortable being uncomfortable.

They couldn’t have made us more proud! The moments shared, the challenges they faced and overcame together and individually, become invaluable in an ever-changing world. We thank our Middle School Assistant Principal Mr Connors and our Middle School Sub-School Leader Mr Vincent for making this happen for our Year 9 Students.

The Summit

Last week, 70 Year 9 students set off on an unforgettable journey at The Summit. From the moment we arrived, people were nervous and excited but by the end, we had all pushed ourselves in ways we never thought possible. As well as doing a variety of team building exercises along the way.

We were split into five separate groups: team Duck Duck, Wolf Pack, the Slay Queen Baddies to name a few. One of the first major challenges was the cave. Crawling through the darkness, not knowing what was ahead, tested our trust, bravery, and ability to stay calm under pressure. It was scary at first and full of screams but seeing the light coming out of the end gave us a huge sense of accomplishment. Then came the leap of faith (literally). Standing on a tall platform and jumping into the air before being lowered by the rope took every ounce of courage, but we cheered each other on and faced it together with some students even getting a playful push from their friends. On day two it brought out our competitive spirit again with an intense game of tug of war, group versus group. In the end, Team Duck Duck came out on top; even managing to beat the teachers!

The Flying Fox gave us a chance to fly across the lake and experience a stunning view. The Summit Window tested our courage standing on a metal rod on top of a tower and letting go, while the inflatable obstacle course brought out our competitive side. And of course, who could forget the mud run (WHICH WE HAD TO DO TWICE!). Sliding and crawling through puzzles and obstacles as a team and in the end, it made us absolutely filthy covered in mud, but it was really fun. (other than getting a few sore muscles from carrying the tyres). We also did a team puzzle course, where we climbed a mud wall, escaped a foam pit, balanced on beams, played memory games, and hunted for scattered puzzle pieces all while racing the clock and working together to try to get the fastest time. In the end, as one last thanks from the Summit team, they gave one person from each of the groups who showed the most courage and team spirit an opportunity to ride in a tank which was a really awesome thing to watch.

Through all these challenges, we learned how to support each other, overcome fears, and step outside our comfort zones. Whether it was encouraging a friend who was nervous or giving something a go even if we were not sure we could do it, every moment helped us grow.

Overall, camp at The Summit was more than just fun, it was a journey, an adventure that helped us smash the “what ifs,” build stronger connections with each other, and walk away with confidence, resilience, and unforgettable memories that we’ll carry with us long after Year 9.

Year 8 & 9 Tanabata Experience

On Thursday 19th of June, we learned about Tanabata in our Japanese lesson. Tanabata is one of Japan’s summer festivals celebrated on 7th July.

We learned the story behind this tradition. The Tanabata shares the ancient bittersweet love story of Orihime and Hikoboshi, a legend that originated from China. These characters in the story represent the two starts Vega and Altair, and so it’s also known as the ‘Star festival”.

We wrote our wishes on coloured sheets of paper called Tanzaku and hanged them up on bamboo. We also saw pictures of the Tanabata festival and learned how the Japanese people celebrate it in Japan.

2025 Victorian Global Learning Awards

We are absolutely delighted to celebrate Rosehill Secondary College’s outstanding success at the 2025 Victorian Global Learning Awards (VGLAs)!

A huge congratulations to Dac Thanh (Dat) Luong, who has been named the Winner of the Year 11 Innovation Award, and to Tu Uyen (Hannah) Ha, who has been recognised as a Finalist in the Year 11 Arts Achievement category for visual arts.

The VGLAs are one of Victoria’s most prestigious education awards, celebrating the academic excellence, creativity, leadership, and community contributions of international students across both government and non-government schools in Victoria. The awards also honour schools for their commitment to global learning and engagement and recognise the vital role of homestay families in supporting international students’ wellbeing and success.

This year, Rosehill Secondary College was proud to be the only school from both the Southwest and North West regions to receive an award, making this achievement even more special and memorable for our school community.

Dat and Hannah’s success is a true reflection of their talent, determination, and hard work, as well as the care, encouragement, and guidance provided by our dedicated teachers, support staff, and the broader Rosehill community.

We warmly congratulate both students on this fantastic state-level recognition. Their achievements have brought great pride to our school and has highlighted the strength of our supportive, inclusive and globally engaged learning community here at Rosehill.

Well done, Rosehill! Together, let’s keep shining on the state and global stage!

Excursion to Werribee Zoo – A Memorable Day of Culture, Wildlife, and Friendship

As part of our ongoing commitment to provide enriching cultural and educational experiences, the Rosehill Secondary College International Student Program recently organised an exciting excursion to Werribee Open Range Zoo for a group of our Junior and Middle School students.

The day offered much more than just a visit to the zoo; it was a meaningful opportunity for our international students to experience an important part of Australian life by learning about the country’s native wildlife. From kangaroos and emus to koalas and many other fascinating animals, students enjoyed close up encounters and gained a deeper understanding of Australia’s unique ecosystems and conservation efforts.

To make the experience even more engaging, international students were encouraged to invite a local Rosehill friend to join them. This wonderful initiative helped build new friendships and encouraged cultural exchange in a relaxed and enjoyable setting. It was a joy to see students from different backgrounds laughing, learning and sharing the day together.

For many, this was their first time visiting an Australian zoo, making the experience both educational and memorable. We look forward to creating more opportunities like this in the future, helping our students continue to grow, connect with others, and celebrate the diversity that makes Rosehill Secondary College such a vibrant and welcoming community.

Performing Arts Show

On August 6th and 7th, the Performing Arts Department (with a little help from their other KLA friends) are going pink with our Cancer Awareness Show ‘The Pink Room’.

While the colour pink is traditionally affiliated with breast cancer, a percentage of our tickets (along with other fundraising on the nights), will be going to the Cancer Council to support people affected by cancer, funding cancer research, and implementing prevention programs for all cancer.

Tickets can be purchased through Try Booking
